We’ve created a wedding vow guide to help you write the perfect sentiments, but here’s a few key tips for crafting wedding vows for her that will make your wedding guests get teary.
- Firstly, you’ll want to ask yourself a few questions about your partner. What do you love most about them? How do they make you feel? How do they make others feel? When did you first know they were ‘the one?’
- Secondly, agree on the tone. Do you want them to be romantic wedding vows or funny wedding vows? Or maybe something in between?
- Lastly, get feedback on your wedding vows draft. It sounds weird, but sharing them with a friend, sibling or even parent can help you figure out if you’re on the right track. After all, you’re going to be saying them in front of an audience…you want to make sure they think they’re sweet as well!
- Keep them short and sweet. Aim to speak for no more than two minutes each, with the ideal length being around one minute. And remember that both of your vows should be around the same length, so talk about what that is ahead of time.

How Do You Start Your Wedding Vows?
One of the easiest ways to start your wedding vows is to say your partner’s name, and make a statement about what you love the most about them. For example, you could say something like:
Partner Name: You are the most caring, thoughtful person I know. You are my best friend, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.
or
Partner Name: They say a life lived in love will never be dull, and since I met you 5 years ago truer words have never been spoken.
If you’re writing your own, a simple wedding vows template you can use is as follows:
Partner Name/Statement about them/Memory about them from the time you first met/How your relationship has been since them/Inspirational quote about love or marriage/What you vow in your marriage
Phrases you can work into your vows include:
- Adventures you’ve taken together
- The laughter and tears you’ve shared
- How they make you a better person
- Your devotion to one another
- How fate brought you together

Wedding Vows FAQ
Traditionally the groom says their wedding vows first, however this can totally be up to you! For LGBTQ+ weddings it can be determined ahead of time who wants to say their vows first. Just remember this is your wedding and you can do it your way!
Generally, you’ll want to avoid including too many inside jokes or deeply personal stories. While your vows are to one another, you are saying them in a room in front of your closest friends and family. The more you can keep them light and loving, the better!
Absolutely! Nobody expects you to memorize your vows. You can write or print them into a beautiful vow book or on thick paper (especially if you’re getting married outside, you don’t want them blowing in the wind). While you can read them, it still means you need to practice! You’ll want to practice reading your vows out loud (so you can hear how you sound) at least once a day for a few weeks before your wedding. Better yet? Record yourself on your phone’s voice memo app so you can see if there are any changes you need to make. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll be saying them on your wedding day!
